Conversion charts
Every paint of one brand beside its nearest in another, on one page.
The ranges
Fourteen ranges, and a page for every pot in them.
How the Paint Matcher works
Pick a Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter or Two Thin Coats paint and see its closest-looking matches.
What you search or paste
Search by name or Vallejo code, such as 72.011. Small typos are fine, and over 30 retired Citadel names, like Boltgun Metal, lead to their modern equivalent. Paste one paint per line: the tool matches the first 500, ignoring counts like 2x and sizes like 18ml. If two ranges share a name, add the brand: (Citadel) after it or VGC before it.
How matches are ranked
Each paint has one hex colour. CIEDE2000, a formula for how different two colours look, gives each pair a ΔE score. Under 3 is a near match, under 7 a safe substitute. Each other range lists up to three of its closest paints in the same finish (opaque, metallic, wash or contrast). A range with none lists its nearest paints of any finish, flagged cross-finish.
What you get back
For one paint, each match shows ΔE, finish, hex and any Vallejo code. Metallic and contrast matches carry a warning. Ranges you pin sort first. A pasted list returns a grid by target range, with a ΔE slider to hide distant matches and an .xlsx download. Matching runs in your browser; nothing you type or paste leaves it. Brand-to-brand charts, such as Citadel to Vallejo, list every paint at once. For a full colour scheme from one paint, use Triad.
§ Questions
- How do I find Citadel paint equivalents for other brands?
- Search for the paint and read the Citadel Base, Layer, Shade and Contrast boxes; each lists its closest matches with ΔE scores.
- How do I make a Vallejo to Citadel conversion chart?
- Enter your Vallejo paints in “Paste a list”, switch off the non-Citadel ranges, press “Match list” and download the .xlsx. “Print-friendly” exports names only. Army Painter to Citadel conversion charts work the same way.
- Is there a Two Thin Coats to Citadel paint conversion chart?
- Yes. Paste your Two Thin Coats paints with the non-Citadel ranges off. Any Citadel equivalent Duncan Rhodes published comes first, marked ◆. His pick may not be the nearest colour.
- Which paint ranges does the Paint Matcher cover?
- It covers Citadel Base, Layer, Shade and Contrast; Vallejo Game Color, Game Air, Mecha Color, Metal Color, Wash and Xpress; Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic, Fanatic Wash and Speedpaint 2.0; and Two Thin Coats.
